High Fashion: What It Is and How It Is Different

high fashion

The fashion industry is constantly evolving and transcending, with new designs created every day. Trends come and go while tastes in fashion change. However, even if these are ever-changing, one thing remains constant — the presence of high fashion.

What is high fashion and what is considered high fashion?

High fashion is described as a set of designs that are high cost, contain unique and high-quality fabrics, and may contain jewelry embellishments. They are custom-made for the wearer and are hand-made by experts.

Oftentimes, they are shown to the public as collections, which have similar themes. Three words that summarize and describe high fashion are: elegant, expensive, and luxurious.

What is the difference between high fashion and couture?

High fashion and couture are often seen as synonymous with Haute couture, a French word, directly translated to ‘high sewing.’ It is also defined as cost specific, occasion-specific, has high quality, and is custom-fitted.

What are examples of high fashion brands?

Getting to know high fashion is easier by recognizing them through brand names. Some of them include Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Balenciaga, Dior Homme, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, Fendi, Saint Laurent, and Givenchy.

What are high and low fashion? What are their differences?

high fashion

On the other hand, low fashion can be defined to be cheap and mass-produced. Moreover, it is described as fast since its styles hit and leave the streets in a short amount of time.

High and low fashion has several differences, including:

  • Price
  • Turn-around time
  • Quality
  • Designs and styles
  • Environmental impact

Price

As high fashion costs tens and thousands of dollars, low fashion costs much less. What made the cost high is the cost of the brand, cost of staffing, licensing, and of course, the designer’s expertise and time. Additionally, marketing expenses top this off.

Turn-around time

There is a vast difference in turn-around time for high and low fashion. Since high fashion is made for a consumer’s specification, it takes more time for it to be produced, taking in mind that the process involves design selection, measurement taking, fitting, and making measurement adjustments.

On the other hand, low fashion can be turned over for around 2 weeks since it is mass-produced and is not made for a specific client.

Quality

The quality is incomparable between high and low fashion. Not only does it come down to the cloth material, but factors such as dye color, durability, and ability to retain shape have noticeable differences between the two.

Environmental impact

Lastly, the environmental impacts of both high and low fashion cannot be denied even if presented with their differences. Low-quality products seem to be replaceable and full of toxins, however, high fashion is also not a saint.

What is the difference between fast fashion and high fashion?

Fast fashion is synonymous with low fashion. With this, their differences are the same wherein fast fashion has a lower price, shorter turn-around time, cheaper quality, and less complicated designs and styles.
